Orion Expeditions Bought By Lindblad

Australian adventure cruise operator, Orion Expeditions has been bought by the US-based Lindblad Expeditions.

The line has long been seen as Australasia’s premier luxury-adventure operator and the move follows two years of record revenue generation for Orion Expeditions, which has been in service since 2004. Their one vessel – the luxurious Orion I –has also been purchased by Lindblad and will operate as part of their fleet from March 2014.

Lindblad Expeditions were founded in 1979 and work closely in partnership with the National Geographic Society. Their vessels operate around many of the world’s most stunningly remote regions, including Alaska, the Galapagos Islands, and the Polar Regions.

The founder of Lindblad Expeditions, Sven Lindblad, said the acquisition will help swell the line’s offerings in Australasia and the South Pacific and commented:

“We are extremely excited about the opportunity to offer global expedition cruising to Australians and we intend to bring the full weight of our experience – and that of National Geographic – to the Orion organisation”

Initial reports are suggesting that Orion I will be re-branded as a National Geographic vessel ,with the name as-of-yet unconfirmed.
