Orion Cruise Ship Rescues Sailor

A French yachtsman has been rescued off the coast of Tasmania by Orion Expeditions’ vessel, Orion.

The luxury cruise liner was heading back from a voyage of Antarctica when it responded to the distress calls of Alain Delord, a French sailor who had been embarking on a round the world solo voyage just off the coast of Tasmania in the Southern Ocean.

63 year old Delord, who abandoned ship when the mast on his yacht snapped due to bad weather, had been adrift for three days in a life raft when he was finally rescued by Orion.

The Australian authorities had been made aware of his location and had been able to drop food and water supplies near the stricken sailor but due to the rough seas and his precarious position they had been unable to perform a helicopter rescue.

Orion, which was headed back to Australia at the time of receiving Delord’s distress call, made a 53 hour diversion to pick Delord up after fighting though round seas and treacherous conditions. Once onboard the ship, Delord was treated by the ship’s doctor and accommodated in one of Orion’s luxurious suites.
