M/V Plancius
M/V Plancius has been in service under various guises since the mid-1970s. Originally a research vessel, she has been in operation for Oceanwide Expeditions since 2004 and underwent a complete rebuild in 2009. She offers accommodation for 116 guests and has 47 crew members including 6 expedition staff and a doctor.
Life onboard M/V Plancius
M/V Plancius offers a comfortable onboard experience that is perfectly suited to the expedition-style sailings she offers. The public areas onboard are comprised of a spacious observation lounge and bar, and a restaurant that doubles as a lecture room during the day for briefings and talks.
There are 53 cabins aboard M/V Plancius which range from Quadruple Porthole cabins to the larger Superior cabins. All of the accommodation options on M/V Plancius have ocean views - either by porthole or a large window - and the cabins include a private bathroom/toilet, a writing desk and storage space.
As is the case with many expedition ships, the entertainment options onboard M/V Plancius are minimal. Instead, guests are encouraged to spend as much time exploring ashore as possible with the ship serving as a base for rest at the end of each day.
M/V Plancius Itineraries
The voyages offered by Oceanwide Expeditions aboard M/V Plancius include both Arctic and Antarctic itineraries. The Arctic sailings focus primarily on the Svalbard region and include a very popular 'Polar Bear Special' in the mid-summer months.
The Anarctic itineraries are 'Basecamp' voyages, which means the ship is posistioned in a place nearby to where many activities can be enjoyed over a period of 4-8 days. These itineraries include overnight camp stays, extended hikes and kayaking.
M/V Plancius also operates on of Oceanwide Expeditions' most famous itineraries, a 37-day voyage that takes in the Antarctic Peninsula alongside several of the lesser known mid-Atlantic Islands. Departing from Ushuaia, the Atlantic Odyssey really is an incredible itinerary - and you even have the opportunity post-disembarkation to fly back to the UK on a scheduled RAF flight bound for Oxfordshire.
