Discover Shackleton's White Continent With Silversea Expeditions
In 2015/2016, Silversea Expeditions will be operating a series of unique Antarctica voyages to mark the centenary of explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance Expedition.
Shackleton’s ship The Endurance sailed from Plymouth towards Antarctica but in 1915, just 200 miles from the Antarctic mainland, the ship became trapped between two ice floes in the Weddell Sea. Initially the crew stayed put, hoping that the winds would change and free the ship, but, after 10 months, they were forced to abandon ship and head out across the ice in search of help. The Endurance Expedition is one of humankind’s most remarkable stories of leadership, determination and ultimately, survival.
Silver Explorer will sail these unique voyages in November 2015, January, February and December 2016. Guests will visit iconic areas of Antarctica including Elephant Island and the South Shetland Islands.
Distinguished historians onboard for each voyage will relay the story of how six men travelled in a tiny lifeboat across the Southern Ocean to find aid for their stricken crewmates and how the rest of the crew managed to endure 138-days in one of the most challenging regions in the world.
Departing from Ushuaia, guests will not only follow in the footsteps of the great explorer Shackleton but also encounter wild and birdlife like nowhere else in the world, including Rockhopper, Gentoo, King, Adelie, and Chinstrap Penguins. They will watch for seals, dolphins and whales, albatross, shearwaters and petrels as well as visit historic sites of the early explorers and remains of whaling operations.
Silversea’s long-term partnership with the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG) will bring other benefits for those on Silver Explorer. An exclusive onboard exhibition will show a specially curated gallery of images by The Endurance’s official photographer Frank Hurley, who documented the expedition on film and through iconic stills photography. There will also be a major exhibition, “The Enduring Eye: the Antarctic Legacy of Sir Ernest Shackleton and Frank Hurley”, which will be held at the headquarters of the RGS in London from the end of November 2015 to the end of February 2016, before a UK and international tour commences in 2017. Silversea guests sailing on Antarctica voyages will have VIP access to the exhibition, with special tours arranged pre- or post-departure for the White Continent.
In all, Silver Explorer will sail a total of 11 voyages to mark the centenary of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s Endurance Expedition with the first departing on November 14 2015. You can view the full range on our website by clicking here.
