Celebrity Cruises To Host Coachella At Sea
Celebrity Cruises has announced their vessel, the Celebrity Silhouette, will be hosting the first Coachella-at-sea music festival later in the year.
The cruise line will offer two back-to-back voyages aboard the 3000-capacity Silhouette. The first of which will depart from Fort Lauderdale on 16 th December bound for Bahamas, and then again on the 19th December for a trip to Jamaica.
This will be the first time that Coachella has been hosted at a venue other than the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California. Acts confirmed for the festival’s high-seas debut include Pulp, Girl Talk and Hot Chip and will perform on purpose-built stages on the main pool deck as well as in two inside venues.
The festival, which has existed in various guises since the late 1990s, is seen as a staple of the US live music calendar with the likes of Madonna, Eminem, and Paul McCartney all having performed in recent years.
Celebrity Cruises, who will rebrand the Silhouette the ‘SS Coachella’ for the voyages, believe the unlikely partnership will delight regular festival-goers, with their Vice President, Dondra Ritzenthaler stating “We’re thrilled to be providing the setting for SS Coachella. Just as the Celebrity Cruises name is synonymous with modern style, service and cuisine, the Coachella name is synonymous with cutting-edge, of-the-moment music trends”.
This is not the first time a cruise ship has been used to host such an event, with both Weezer and 70s rock legends Kiss organising similar musical cruise-weekends in the past 12 months.
