A Year Of Tall Ship Cruising: The Best Places To Sail With Star Clippers In 2016

There’s no other sailing experience quite like that of being aboard a tall ship and to celebrate the arrival of a new year, Star Clippers has shared its best places to sail with them each month in 2016.

January 2016 - Winter Caribbean warmth

For winter warmth, turquoise sea and golden beaches Star Clippers’ fleet of three tall ships all relocate to the Caribbean for the winter, where these smaller sized vessels can avoid the crowds normally associated with cruising and drop anchor close to sun baked beaches, alongside colourful towns and ports, and next to spectacular reefs for diving and scuba fans. Beach barbecues on deserted shores are a highlight of the sailings, while night-time star-gazing under clear Caribbean skies, and sun-downers in the Tropical Bar on deck, are also popular.

February 13th 2016 - Romance afloat

Royal Clipper is one of the most beautiful vessels afloat and often dubbed the `love boat’ for the romance of cruising under sail, the chance to wake for dawn dolphin watching, to lie together in the bow-sprit net, or gaze at the stars from the warm upper decks. For Valentine’s Day 2016 the ship will be in St. Lucia as part of a 7-night Windward Islands cruise.

March 16th 2016 – Cool Cuba

Cuba has barely changed in 50 years of communism while evidence of the pre-communist years can be seen in the garishly coloured American cars of the ‘40s and ‘50s, the decadent buildings and the colonial past of Spanish rule. Star Flyer is one of few ships to operate cruises to Cuba, calling in to colourful Havana and around the idyllic, paradise beaches of the west coast to the Cayman Islands and back into the delightful colonial town of Cienfuegos, Cuba.

August 6th 2016 – Toast a volcano

Italy’s live volcano on the island of Stromboli gives a firework show of fire and molten debris approximately every ten minutes and has been in continuous eruption for 2000 years. The 4-masted Star Flyer sails past the island by night, giving guests the chance to see this natural phenomenon with a glass of bubbly in hand. Departing on 6th August 2016, Star Flyer calls into the island of Lipari, Messina, followed by the evening Stromboli sail-past, on to Amalfi, Sorrento, Ponza and back to Rome.

September 1st 2016 – Med mini cruise

Short sailings are both a toe-in-the-water opportunity for newcomers to try cruising for the first time and a chance for many Star Clippers guests to get on board as frequently as possible. In 2016 Star Clippers have sailings from 4 nights’ duration, including a round trip from Venice to Croatia, Slovenia and Trieste, Italy.

October 15th 2016 – Three sea days

Cruise lovers also love sea-days when the open sea ensures relaxation on sun decks, the chance for a massage or spa treatment, a chat with the captain or officers on the open bridge, the chance to climb the rigging 50’ up to the crow’s nest, or to lie in the bowsprit net with the waves skimming below, often accompanied by dolphins. Three sea days are included in Star Flyer’s 7-night sailing from Malaga to Las Palmas, departing on 15th October 2016, with the ship meanwhile calling into Morocco (Tangier), Cadiz to Funchal, Maderia arriving into Las Palmas.

Experience a full Panama Canal transit through the many locks of this magnificent waterway on board the 170-passenger square rigger, Star Flyer. December 23rd 2016 – An Asian Christmas

With the triangular outline of the lights on the masts forming impromptu Christmas trees, a sociable atmosphere on board and incredible opportunities to call in to smaller ports and harbours, the three clippers in the Star Clippers’ fleet are both festive and exotic places to be at Christmas. Back to Asia for the first time since 2012, Star Clipper sails from Phuket to Singapore on 23rd December, spending Christmas day at Phang Nga Bay, flanked by sheer sided mountains, spectacular scenery and with white sandy beaches and coral reefs.
