OUR ALASKAN ADVENTURE

OUR ALASKAN ADVENTURE
June 2006

Having arrived at Toronto airport, we were met by a very efficient Regent representative and a stretch limo took us to our hotel. After spending a very enjoyable evening in a beautiful hotel arranged by Regent, we awoke quite early and decided to explore a little before boarding after lunch. A conference room had been set aside in the hotel by Regent which was at our disposal all day. Two representatives made sure we all knew what was happening that day and ensured that our hand luggage was kept safe. Our cases were already being transported to the ship.

We decided to explore the area a little; as we walked out of the hotel, there she was Regent Seven Seas Mariner in all her glory docked right next to the hotel – how convenient is that!

Having sailed several times with Silversea we were hoping that we did not spend all of our time comparing trips and being slightly disappointed. Embarkation went very smoothly and was well organised. Our cabin was very similar to Silversea with the layout, balcony etc the same. One thing I would say is that I was pleasantly surprised to find that the walk-in wardrobe was slightly larger than on Silversea.

There was the usual bottle of champagne when we arrived and we were entitled to two other bottles of champagne, wine or spirits, free of charge during the cruise. Fresh fruit was replaced every day.

We explored the ship and were surprised that the standard was so high. We enjoyed our evening meal and found the menu varied, this was especially important as one of the four in our party has a very limited diet. It was a special treat for my sister and her husband and we were relieved that she felt so comfortable in the restaurant.

The only negative thing I would say about the evening meal, was that the wine list (both inclusive and the premium wine list ) was not up to the standard we would have expected. On our return, my husband rang Regent and spoke to the Sales Directors who assured us that this was not normally the case. We were not offered complimentary wine at lunch time which we found quite odd. In fact we were charged $10 for a glass of Chardonnay. We understand that wine is normally offered at lunch time.

The whole trip was such an adventure, to be in such a beautiful part of the world and to see the wildlife is a memory to treasure.

Each excursion, was exceptionally well organised, the crew were all friendly and helpful. We found the facilities on the ship to be of a very high standard, plenty of areas to sit & read or help yourself to a coffee. We mainly had breakfast in our cabin as many of the excursions left quite early. The choice and standard was very good. The waiter was always on time.

We went to see a couple of shows which were absolutely excellent. The views from the Horizon Lounge were fantastic. One evening we watched the sun go down as we slowly sailed the inside passage with humpback whales surfacing now and then in the distance – fantastic!

Disembarkation was also excellent, having left the ship, we were driven to Whittier and did not see our cases again until we finally arrived at Heathrow, many, many hours later.

All in all, I would say that our experience of Regent was good and that we would have no hesitation in cruising with them again.
