Destinations - Atlantic Islands - Madeira, Funchal

Madeira has been described as the "Island of Eternal Spring." Located off the coast of Morocco, Madeira is Portugal’s other world. Volcanic in origin, the island's peaks stretch out of the sea from the valleys in the ocean depths. The volcanic soil and the mild climate are credited for the abundance of lush and multicolored vegetation.

Although reportedly known to other nations in earlier times, the Madeira archipelago was rediscovered in the early part of the 15th century by Portugal and, shortly afterward, Portuguese colonization began. Today Madeira is an integral part of Portugal.

Along the center of the island runs a mountain chain which provides a spectacular contrast to the fertile coast lands where the principal crops such as sugar cane, bananas and grapes flourish. Terraces of farmland extend into the hills, adding tiers of green beauty to the landscape. Although there are no real beaches, hotels boast large man-made pools. The rugged landscape, abundant vegetation and ideal climate bring the island fame as a year-round resort.

Madeira is renowned for its superb embroidery which carries the island’s name, as does the wine, which many feel ranks among the world’s best. Wicker baskets and furniture also show fine Madeiran craftsmanship.

Funchal, the islands’ capital, has a wide selection of resort hotels where watersports, golf and tennis are popular activities. Visitors can tour the 15th-century cathedral, the orchid gardens of Quinta das Cruzes and buildings associated with Christopher Columbus. Outside of Funchal, the descent by wicker toboggan from Monte is popular with many visitors.
