Volcanic eruptions formed the Canary Island archipelago, just off the coast of Africa. The smaller of the two main islands, Lanzarote is unique in natural beauty and rich in folkloric legend. The Genoese named the island during their fourteenth century visit and by the early part of the fifteenth century, the Normans settled here under the request of the King of Castile. Soon other islands were captured by the Normans, but pirating posed much chaos. In 1730, a violent volcanic eruption occurred, creating six new mountains. In 1824 another massive eruption occurred spreading molten lava all over the island.
