China ceded Hong Kong to Britain in 1842 after its defeat in the first Opium War. In 1860, following the second Opium War, the peninsula of Kowloon on the mainland was added to the colony. In 1984 China and Britain signed a joint declaration under which China would resume sovereignty over the British Crown Colony in 1997.
