Haiphong, with a population of over 1.2 million people, is the second largest city in the north and Vietnam’s major port. The First Indochina War started here with the French bombing of the port in 1946 when thousands of civilians died. During the Vietnam War, the U.S. lost more than 300 warplanes here. For a long time, much of the city resembled a gray urban sprawl pockmarked with factories and bombed-out buildings.

In recent years, the city has seen rapid growth and a change in its image. Still boasting old colonial architecture that surprisingly survived the bombardment, Haiphong has now a resort and even is the site of Vietnam’s first casino. Haiphong is 60 miles from the capital city of Hanoi, linked by National Highway 5.
