Busan is South Korea’s second largest city and is due to be visited by cruise lines including Holland America, Princess Cruises and Silversea Cruises in 2012. In contrast to Busan’s modern feel is Haedong Yonggungsa Temple, perched on cliffs overlooking the sea, the tranquility and Buddhist calm of 6th Century Beomeosa Temple with its mountain backdrop and Geumjeong Fortress. A somber but beautiful place to visit is The United Nations Cemetery. Here soldiers that were killed from the 16 countries that made up the UN force to defend Korea are buried. It is the only UN memorial park in the world. Lovers of retail therapy will also be happy to note that Pusan is also home to the world’s largest department store; the Shinsegae Centum City.
You will also find that some cruise lines Korean ports other than Incheon and Busan. One such port is the island of Jeju. Situated off the southern most tip of the Korean Peninsula, Jeju was created as a result of five massive volcanic eruptions over one million years ago. These eruptions left a stunning landscape and natural formations that has led to 10% of Jeju being listed as a UNESCO Natural Heritage site.
