On your search for the cloudless skies and golden beaches of the Canary Islands, your first port of call is Corunna and its glistening buildings which overlook the harbour. Relax on the paradise island of Madeira and enjoy its fine wines, or take in the stunning scenery and wonderful views on a levada walk.
Your first Canary Island is lovely La Palma. With mountains rising to over 8,000 feet, it is the most mountainous of all and home to one of the world’s largest craters – the Caldera de Taburiente. Tenerife is next with its diverse scenery – from resplendent tropical paradises to barren desolate deserts. It also boasts a host of wondrous beaches and chic resorts.
See where Columbus stayed on his way to and from discovering the New World in cosmopolitan Las Palmas on Gran Canaria. And uncover the expansive sand dunes that were blown in from North Africa. Lanzarote has outstanding natural beauty, with its dramatic lunar landscape and stretches of fine sandy beaches. Explore some of its 300 volcanoes and try a camel safari.
Andalucia’s Cadiz has a charming old quarter, filled with narrow streets and small squares, and is the gateway to the sherry bodegas of Jerez. Uncover Lisbon’s historical past in its Moorish architecture and forbidding battlements. And when you get to Vigo, follow the pilgrims to the impressive cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, the third holiest site in all Christendom.
