Porto Cervo Cruises
The resort town of Porto Cervo is situated along Sardinia's Costa Smeralda [Emerald Coast]. This ruggedly beautiful region on the island's northeast coast stretches like a 30-mile necklace of wild, lonely coves interspersed by extravagant villas and no less than 80 powder-white beaches. It is a land of twisted cork trees, glistening juniper and whispering pines, with a sprinkling of rosemary to scent the air. Angular mountains of granite and basalt form spectacular backdrops and vales are dotted with prehistoric fortress-like structures, or nuraghi.
In the early 1960s, Prince Karim Aga Khan discovered the charm and great potential of this idyllic coastal stretch. In 1962, a small group of international financiers, headed by the prince, founded the Emerald Coast Consortium with the aim of developing an exclusive resort area. Luxury hotels were built to accommodate the most discriminating travelers from all over the world. Porto Cervo is the heart of the Costa Smeralda. The promenade and tiny squares are lined with some of the most prestigious designer shops and art galleries. Its yacht basin is one of the best and most expensive in the Western world. On a hill overlooking Porto Cervo stands the little church of Stella Maris. Its chapel features a famous painting by El Greco and is also noted for its bronze doors by the well-known artist, Luciano Minguzzi.
Some of the most exclusive sporting events connected with the resort include the Cervo Tennis Tournaments and the Emerald Coast International Rally. The splendid 18-hole Pevero Golf Course is laid out between two bays, providing for a unique panorama.
