Northern Lights Cruises

Northern Lights cruises are a truly exciting way to experience one of the world’s most wonderful, natural phenomena. Not only will you get an excellent vantage point to witness the spectacularly colourful light show but you will also be able to enjoy all the comfort and amenities that a holiday aboard a cruise ship has to offer.

Aurora Borealis Cruises

Often referred to as Aurora Borealis, the Northern Lights are caused by explosions on the sun throwing out millions of particles, which in turn ignite as they hit the earth’s atmosphere. Many comment that the Northern Lights are similar to a rainbow at night, with the sky shimmering in an array of green, pink and purple hints of light. Every formation of light is different which means your Northern Lights cruise will be truly unique.

The Northern Lights can be seen from Norway and perhaps more clearly from inside the Arctic Circle. A typical Northern Lights itinerary begins by cruising up the coast of northern Norway towards North Cape where the lights are often found illuminating the sky in all their glory. In terms of the best time of year to see the Northern Lights, it’s often thought that their activity is at its most frequent during late autumn/early, with the best time to look at them between 6pm and 1am. Of course, the staff onboard any Northern Lights cruise you choose will keep you updated on the best times for visibility and clarity.

Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises

Hurtigruten cruises offer many cruises along the Norwegian coast, giving you plenty of opportunities along the way to view the Northern Lights. Cruise from Bergen to Kirkenes and you will witness the change in scenery as you travel north into the Arctic Circle. It is during this stretch that many people get their first glimpse of the lights as they transform the previously pitch-black, still sky. Hurigruten’s Northern Explorer cruise will take you from Tromso to Bergen, visiting the most northern point of Europe whilst allowing you to explore the legends of the mysteriously enchanting Rorvik.

The great thing about a Hurtigruten Northern Lights’ cruise is the amount of exciting shore excursions on offer as you make your way to the Arctic Circle. For example, you can enjoy a snowmobile safari in Kirkenes, take in a Midnight Concert in the Arctic Cathedral and even enjoy a post-cruise stay in the Kirkenes Snow Hotel.
