Iwo Jima Cruises

Iwo-jima (Sulfur Island) is one of the Volcano Islands (Kanzan Retto) lying more than 600 miles to the southwest of Japan in the Pacific. It is dominated by Mt. Suribachi volcano, also called Suribati-yama, which has at least ten historic eruptions, all in this century. The most recent eruption was in 1982. The subdued relief of Iwo Jima made it a natural site for airfields during World War II. During the 36 day historic battle for this island in 1945, nearly 20,000 US and Japanese soldiers lost their lives. Almost one hundred thousand men fought on a tiny island just four miles by two miles.
