Guadeloupe Cruises
Guadeloupe is situated in the southern region of the Leeward Islands and is comprised of two islands separated by a narrow stretch of water; Grande-Terre and Basse-Terre.
Grade-Terre is the more typically scenic of the two and offers classic Caribbean elements such as beautiful beaches, bars, restaurants and late-night entertainment options.
Basse-Terre is more mountainous and is home to one of Guadeloupe’s main attractions; the towering La Grande Soufriere volcano. La Grade Soufriere is one of the highest peaks in the Caribbean and was last active in the 1970’s. It’s an imposing sight and sits atop dense forestry and hidden pathways.
Despite its location, Guadeloupe is considered part of France and as such is a culturally vibrant island that boasts a proud history where the arts are concerned. Most notably, the poet Saint-John Perse won a Noble Literature Prize in the 60’s for his work reflecting on human nature and the effects of World War II.
If visiting the island on a cruise holiday we recommend you take the opportunity to visit the Jacques Cousteau Underwater Reserve where you can enjoy glass-bottom boat rides over the coral reef, snorkelling and other assorted water-sports.
