Situated on the west coast of Martinique, the entire city was destroyed when Mount Pelee erupted in 1902. The rebuilt town has a heavy Creole influence and enjoys a beautiful setting between the hills and the sea, guarded by the former naval fortress of Fort Saint Louis at its entrance.
