St Kitts’ capital, Basseterre, is located on the southwest coast of the island. Discovered in 1493 and named by Christopher Columbus after himself, the island offers a contrast of barren mountainous areas surrounding the dormant Mount Liamuiga volcano and lush green tropical rainforests. Unlike many larger Caribbean destinations, St Kitts remains largely unspoiled making it a delightful port of call for your cruise.
Despite being geographically very small, Basseterre’s port is able to welcome the largest cruise ships in the world, meaning the opportunity to visit St Kitts is available for a variety of popular family cruise lines including Royal Caribbean and luxury cruise lines such Seabourn and Silversea. Around the port area you’ll find shops, cafés and restaurants, and a 15 minute walk will find you in Basseterre’s bustling centre. Stroll around the old quarter admiring the many well-restored buildings from the colonial era which remain today.
If you want to experience Basseterre’s colourful town centre, head to the Circus. Here you’ll find a small square inspired by London’s Piccadilly Circus with a clock tower at its centre. The perfect place for a spot of people watching, the square is surrounded by restaurants where you can enjoy lunch or just a drink and absorb the sights and sounds of the bustling scene around you.
If you’d prefer a quieter stop in Basseterre, why not head to one of St Kitts’ idyllic beaches? The south-eastern coast of the island offers endless stretches of pure white sand for you to relax upon. The two-mile expanse between Cockleshell Bay and Banana Bay is a popular choice. Here you can swim and snorkel in the clear Caribbean waters or even sample the local rum punch at the beach bar.
